Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the acceptance and commitment therapy(ACT) program on psychological adjustment of university students with a high level of social anxiety. Subjects of the study were 88 university students of the Y University in D city, who obtained above 92 points on Social Anxiety and Distress Scale. They were randomized into two groups; experimental group(40 participants) and waiting-list control group(38 participants). Students in the experimental group participated in the ACT program, which was developed by Mun(2006). The program was conducted once a week for ten weeks with each session of 120 minutes from January 9 to March 19, 2012. To examine the effects of the program, students in both experimental and waiting-list control groups were tested on social anxiety, depression, fear of negative evaluation, irrational beliefs, and psychological well-being tests. Students were tested before and after the program, and after the fourth session. In addition, two posttests were conducted at the fourth and the sixth month after the termination of the program. The data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA to examine the effects of the program, and a posttest was conducted using the Bonferroni correction to analyze the changes in the experimental group students. Results showed that the ACT program conducted in this study had significant effects on the psychological adjustment of university students with a high level of social anxiety. Specifically, the program was effective in decreasing students¡¯ social anxiety and increasing psychological well-being, and the effects were maintained up to the sixth month after the program. Also, the program was effective in decreasing students¡¯ depression, fear of negative evaluation and irrational beliefs, and an additional decrease was found even at the sixth month after the program.
